RLSS09: Robot Learning Summer School
Dates: Mon 20 to Fri 24 July, 2009
Venue: Instituto Superior Tecnico, Lisboa, Portugal
Overview
During the last years learning robots have increasingly received more attention by the robotics community. There is an increasing interest in machine learning and statistics within the robotics community. At the same time, there has been a growth in the learning community in using robots as motivating applications for new algorithms and formalisms. Considerable evidence of this exists in the use of learning in high-profile competitions such as RoboCup and the DARPA Challenges, and the growing number of research programs funded by governments around the world. Additionally, the volume of research is increasing, as shown by the number of learning papers accepted to IROS and ICRA, and the corresponding number of learning sessions.
This school is mainly designed for PhD students in learning robots who want to acquire a good understanding of current research and open challenges. At the same time, it may serve as a good introduction to those people with a different background who want to introduce themselves to this area. The school will allow the participants to get in touch with international experts in this field. More long term results will include exchange of students, joint publications and potential joint projects.

The summer school will be held at the Instituto Superior Tecnico (IST) in Lisbon, Portugal. IST has a long history in robotics research, machine learning and computer vision and is currently involved in several research projects in these areas. This Summer School is organized by Instituto de Sistemas e Robótica in cooperation with the IEEE Technical Committee in Learning Robots, jointly with support from the FCT.
